Congratulations to this month's Alumni Ambassador of the Month, Richard, Richmond, BC.
The Perfect Match?
Back in 2005, I made one of the best decisions of my life. I thought being a Big Brother would allow me to make an impact in the life of a young adult in our community. I thought being a Big Brother could create positive experiences and memories for a growing child. In the past three and a half years, I have been able to do those things and so much more.
My experiences with my Little Brother Lucas have been life changing. I use the term life changing because the growth and development aspect of our relationship has been a two-way street. Has Lucas matured and developed as a person? Absolutely. Has Lucas expanded his horizons? Most definitely. Has Lucas demonstrated an ability to show care and compassion for those around him? In no uncertain terms, I can say that this is where he has shown the most amount of development. But what most people may not understand is that observing kids grow up allows us as adults to grow along with them. As Big Brothers we are there to remind our Little that there is more to life than video games. As Littles they remind us that there is more to life than work. In a world where we are so consumed with thinking about money and our next big pay raise, our Little reminds us that it is more important to just be ourselves. Overall, our Littles remind us of what it is like to be kids again. When you consider these important life lessons, hockey games, football games, baseball games, laser tag, and any activity are just bonuses. When I think of the Big Brothers program, I cannot think of a better example of a give and take relationship. In a society where lasting friendships are hard to come by, this aspect is so important. Programs like the Big Brothers Mentoring program are excellent methods of building lasting friendships. In today’s society it is so vital that we cultivate future generations that will grow and thrive in our challenging environment. The Big Brothers program provides a vital tool for future generations to succeed. The best part is that we are not just helping young children. We are helping young children that may grow up to be Canada’s next doctor, Olympic athlete, or humanitarian. When it comes to the Big Brothers mentoring program, the possibilities are endless.
